Morning, your safari guide will pick you up in Arusha. After a brief introduction, begin your drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. After registration, ascend to the crater rim, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as Africa’s “Garden of Eden.”
Afternoon: Descend 600 meters into the crater floor for an unforgettable game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder, teeming with an incredible concentration of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino). You’ll have excellent chances to spot wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, hippos, and a vast array of birdlife, including flamingos, at Lake Magadi. Late afternoon, ascend back to the crater rim. Evening, drive to your lodge in the Karatu region for dinner and an overnight stay
Morning (approx. 8:00 AM): After breakfast, depart from Karatu through the Ngorongoro area and begin your adventurous journey towards Lake Natron. This drive takes you through scenic Maasai lands, with increasing views of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The road to Lake Natron can be dusty and rough, but it’s part of the authentic experience. The drive takes approximately 4-5 hours.
Afternoon: Arrive at Lake Natron, a surreal and highly alkaline soda lake famous for its vibrant red hues and as the most important breeding ground for Lesser Flamingos in East Africa. After lunch, you will take some rest and proceed with the Engaresero Waterfalls Hike. Enjoy a refreshing walk up the Engaresero River gorge, leading to a series of beautiful waterfalls where you can cool off in natural pools. This is a pleasant and scenic hike through a lush canyon.
In the Evening, check into your camp or lodge near Lake Natron. Enjoy dinner and the tranquil sounds of the African bush.
Early Morning (Optional, pre-dawn start): For the adventurous, embark on a challenging but rewarding hike up Ol Doinyo Lengai, the active “Mountain of God” to the Maasai. This strenuous trek offers incredible sunrise views over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
Late morning/noon, return to your lodge for breakfast. Afternoon, begin your drive back to Arusha. The return journey will allow you to reflect on the incredible landscapes and cultural encounters you’ve experienced. Arrive in Arusha, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward journey, or opt to explore Lake Duluti and Hot Springs the next day.
